Construction of 360 hydroelectric power stations in Transcarpathia quashed by court

Yesterday, on July 30, Transcarpathian Regional Administrative Court ruled in favor of the complainants V.Feskov, V.Voloshin, O.Stankevich, A.Solontay and O.Luksha. Public officials had appealed the decision of the Transcarpathian Regional Council № 310 "On approval of the local and regional schemes for placement of small hydroelectric power stations", which envisages the construction of up to 360 hydroelectric stations in Transcarpathian region.

Thus, the court overturned the decision of Transcarpathian Regional Council, having taken into account the plaintiffs’ arguments about the inadmissibility of the construction of small hydroelectric power stations in Transcarpathian region.

According to the expert plaintiffs, the decision was made with the gross violations of Ukrainian legislation – namely, the Local Government Act, access to public information, the local state administrations, urban planning, as well as it contradicts common sense, the position of the public, and experts’ conclusions of professionals and Ukraine’s international agreements on the joint management of the Danube river basin. Therefore, it should be abolished.

It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Regional Development and Building, in turn, had also supported the claim of public figures, knowing about the impermissibility of such decisions by Transcarpathian Regional Council.
