Summer, heat, we are thirsty almost all the time. This is the period when everybody enjoys watermelons and melons. What are the secrets of proper selection of watermelons?
The best time for buying a watermelon is late summer and autumn.
Size
One should always choose a melon of medium size – 5-7 kilos. You should also pay attention to its neighbors – be careful with giant berries (it is possible that a watermelon has absorbed too much fertilizers) when all others are small, and vice versa – watermelons of the same degree of ripening should not differ greatly in size.
Color
The colors of watermelon should be contrast, that means that dark and light stripes must be clearly outlined.
State of watermelon’s skin
Skin must be very hard. Brown wet skin is an indication that a watermelon is overripe.
Edges
Everybody has heard that you can say if a watermelon is a girl or a boy judging from the edge of the berry: girls are considered more tasty. A boy-watermelon has a convex bottom and a small circle on it. Girl-berries’ bottom is flatter and has a wide circle on it.
Tail
The state of a tail, which sticks out (if it hasn’t been cut by sellers), can also tell you about the ripening of the fruit. A tail should be moderately dry. Wet green tail indicates an immature fruit.
Spot at the side
This spot is formed in the place where a melon touched the ground and if you can see it, it means that the berry was ripening in the garden. The spot should be yellow or (even better) dark orange, but not white!
Good to know: To test the ripeness of a watermelon put it into the water, if it floats it means it is ripe.
