Little Nicolas’ pedestrian crossings in Uzhgorod (PHOTOS)

Safe pedestrian crossings near schools started being painted in Uzhgorod for money collected by public initiative. The project is carried out by Uzhgorod Little Nicolas’ assistants – the townspeople, who have united around the fantastic character, a symbol of good deeds. Under the sign of Little Nicolas on Wednesday the crossings appeared in Radvanka neighborhood – near the schools number 13 and 7. In total it is planned to equip ten objects.

The project, which is now being realized in the regional center of Transcarpathia – arrangement of safe pedestrian crossings near the schools of the city – is the second initiative, inspired by Uzhgorod Little Nicolas. We remind, according to the legend, Little Nicolas (Nikolaichyk) is a little helper of Saint Nicholas, which has come to Uzhgorod with a mission to perform miracles and increase good deeds.

The initiative group of concerned citizens gathered about 60 thousand hryvnia at the reception of Nikolaichyk, it has identified priorities for the addresses where the crossings near schools are most needed. And, without waiting for the government to be able to find funds and draw “zebras” in the streets, they are making crossings of a new sample. The signs are made with hard plastic coating with reflective properties which will serve for years. The work is performed by a team of workmen from the city of Rivne – the only one that masters such a technology, the application of which allows perform the largest number of crossings.

The initiators of the event – Uzhgorod Nikolaichyk’s assistants – believe that this is some kind of challenge for city services. And they hope that the example of a public initiative, which has embodied the project for the city, will make authorities to be more active and look for the opportunity to equip the remaining crosswalks in Uzhgorod in order to take care of safety.
