Chinese roses, hibiscus, or as people call them – flowers of love – have just started to blossom on the streets. Uzhhorod dwellers can enjoy looking at one of the bushes with lilac flowers, similar to the mallow until the end of September on Dovzhenko Street, near the Court of Appeal.
The plant really belongs to the mallow family originally it is from the tropical Southeast Asia and lives for 20 years or more. Inhabitants of Uzhgorod decorate their courtyards, balconies and window sills at home with hibiscus. For more than 250 species of mallow family are only Chinese roses which are cultivated as house plants. It is known that at the beginning of the nineteenth century hibiscus was grown in the botanical gardens of Europe. The plant was named in Hawaii as ‘flower of beautiful women’ or ‘flower of love’ and the local girls often braid hibiscus in their hair. However, Chinese roses have not only decorative purpose from one of them people also receive paint for fabric, dyestuffs for beverages and hair which are used in folk medicine.
