The Government of Spain intends to boycott the Euro-2012 final game in Kiev if the country’s national team makes its way there.
The European Championship boycott has already reached the players. The National Spain team may not reach the Euro-2012 final match if the Ukrainian Government does not deal with the detention in prison of the former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Jose Manuel Garcia-Margalit.
Such an option is available in case of the consolidate boycott from all the European teams. And of course, the Spaniards still need to get to the finals.
‘If the national Spain team makes its way to the European Championship final, there will not be a single representative of our government. We will go to Kyiv only if the Ukrainians deal with Tymoshenko’s situation’, – he claimed. According to the words of Spanish official, the option with the final match boycott by the football players has already being discussed with Germany.
The impetus for the new wave of applications was the appearance on the internet Tymoshenko’s photos on which the former Prime Minister demonstrates the beatings, allegedly inflicted on her in the Kachaniv colony during her transportation to the hospital.
The Prosecutors assert that the marks on her body is the result of ‘contact with the blunt hard objects’ and Tymoshenko might be accused of inflicting beatings on herself.
Thus, on April 30, the government spokesman in Germany confirmed that the Chancellor Angelina Markel puts her visit to Ukraine during the European Football Championship in dependence on Tymoshenko’s destiny: ‘There are still no specific plans for the trip’, – he said, adding that the further planning depends on the situation around the detained Tymoshenko.
The European Commission President Jose-Manuel Barrozy has joined to the Euro-2012 boycott. In particular, he will ignore the championship opening ceremony which will be held on June 8th, 2012, the Czech President Vatslav Klaus cancelled his trip to Ukraine following Merkel.
Also, European politicians have decided to boycott the state of Central Europe summit that should be held on May 11-12, 2012 in Yalta.
The European Union considers the prison sentence of Tymoshenko, which began in October 2011, as politically motivated. The European authorities also seriously concerned by rumors of the former Prime Minister health worsening and beating her by the prison guards.
