The Swiss government declared that starting from May 1 the entrance into the country of the EU citizens: from Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary will be restricted.
Bern activated safeguard clauses (safety precautions) which are included in the agreement on free movement signed in Brussels in 2002. The agreement provides the opportunity to implement this article in the case of increase permits for foreigners-UE citizens by 10% in comparison with the statistics of the three previous years.
The Switzerland Confederation of the Federal Council stated that this figure was exceeded last year, reports Romanian agency Agerpres.
On the basis of the agreement on free movement, signed with the EU ten years ago, Switzerland may use this law till May 2014 and re-impose quotas for a limited period unilaterally.
The Switzerland government announced that the safety precautions (safeguard clauses) are not related to 53000 European Union citizens who have received the five-year residence permit in 2011.
