We met this interesting man recently at the festival "Hutsul bryndzya" in Rakhiv. He was treating the guests. He was pouring some liquid from… a stick. We could not but to come up and ask about it.
It turned out it was a bota – carved wooden stick with a cavity for liquid inside and a cap that serves as a cup. And inside, it contained yafynivka (blackberry homebrew) – the Hutsul liquor. With such bota, they tend sheep in the valleys.
The man’s name is Yuriy Pop, he is the secretary of Vodytsia village council in Rakhiv district. He said that once he was watching a Romanian concert on TV, and saw such bota there. He decided to make one for himself. Only ash wood is used for it. The capacity is half a liter.
"I often get invited to various festivals. For the first time, when I went to the festival in Khust district with this bota, many people were not watching the festival, because they were looking at my bota. You have to know that I treat only decent people. Well, now you must drink" – the Hutsul jokes.
