Winter is no hindrance: giant lemons, oranges, kumquats and pepinos are growing in Transcarpathia

On nine lemon trees, there are over fifty huge fruits, each of which weighs about half a kilogram. There is a waiting line of people for tasting.

Local gardener have grown 27 species of exotic fruit trees. In two small greenhouses, they are already harvesting lemons, and oranges, tangerines and kumquats will have ripened by the New Year, – reporters of the Channel 5 tell.

12-year-old Mikaella helps her mother to conduct a tour in greenhouses. This time, she invited her classmates. The girl is already well-versed in growing of exotic fruits and shares secrets.

"It takes a lot of patience, a lot of efforts, and I can recommend everyone a very good fertilizer… Take ordinary water and put banana peel there, let it infuse for about a week, and then just water the flowers" – the young gardener says.

Mikaella’s mother – Violetta – has always loved to work with earth, and six years ago she decided to grow exotic trees. Books and the Internet helped to put the idea into practice.

"It all started with a couple of lemons, tangerines, oranges, kumquats and bananas. The rest of the plants have appeared as we learned to work with them. Excursions also helped, because during each excursion there were always some experts who would ask: "Do you have this and that?". I would answer: "No, but I will", – Violetta Obryvko says.

Nowadays, there are almost three dozen fruit and almost fifty decorative exotic trees and shrubs in her garden. In the summer, the family gathered the second crop of coffee, this year, they have had kiwi, are expecting oranges and other citrus.

Visitor Yana Hulianych says: "I learned about the Chinese tangerine, and also that the lemons that grow in the greenhouse taste not like those from a shop."

The gardener plans to make excursions to the greenhouses regular so that locals and tourists can see the plants that take root in Transcarpathia, as well as taste well-known and unknown exotic fruits.
