New Uzhgorod cemetery may be in Tarnivetsi village council, rather than at the border with Slovakia
The sad joke of the ex-mayor Pogorelov that soon the dead Uzhgorod residents will have to be buried
on Poshtova Square now sounds less like a joke.
The cemetery in Barvinok has almost exhausted its resources, and the issue of a new cemetery still
has not been resolved. Opposition media and politicians criticize the city authorities for inaction on
The manager of the utility company Anatoliy Sukholov is not so pessimistic. According to him, they
will be able to bury people at the cemetery in Barvinok for another three or four months. "But the
issue, of course, is critical, – he adds. – I do not know why the progress is so slow. The need for a new
city cemetery has been discussed for 5 years now, and the issue still has not been resolved."
According to the Acting Mayor of Uzhgorod V. Shchadey, the area for a new cemetery chosen by
predecessors is a little surprising. First, a cemetery near the border with Slovakia would hardly be
appropriate, and secondly the very area is "complicated" and requires a lot of permits.
"Two years ago there was another project of the cemetery, according to which it was to be located
in Tarnivetsi village council – Shchadey reminded. – I do not know why it was rejected. There are 20
hectares of land and no one was objecting against giving it to the city for a cemetery."
Victor Shchadey said that he had already had a conversation about this with the chairman of
Uzhgorod District Council Mykhailo Fedynets, and he said that it was quite possible to arrange a
cemetery on this territory.
Currently, there is no final decision yet, but the City Council is considering this project.
