Where is the history of Transcarpathian ancestry kept?

On the shelves of the Transcarpathian archive, there are more than 1 million 360 thousand files, that tell about the difficult and sometimes tragic fate of the people in the Carpathian region, their struggle for national self-assertion. Also, the contents of the ancient documents reflects the historical events that took place in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Poland and other European countries. They certainly had a direct impact on the history, social and socio-economic development of Transcarpathia.

Among the documents kept in the State Archives, there are church and metric books of the villages in the region.

Church books of all the major religions (Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Reformed, Greek Catholic, Baptist and Jewish) are stored in the State Archives of the region (in the fund 1606 "The collection of church and metric books of Transcarpathia"). In total, there are 1788 of them covering the period from 1712 to 1952.

They are valuable because, for example, in the church books of births, which were kept in churches of Orthodox and Greek Catholic parishes of Transcarpathia, you can find information on date of birth and date of baptism of the child, the name of the settlement and the number of the house, where the child’s parents were living at the time, names and surnames of the parents, their social status (worker or peasant, poor or wealthy), mother’s surname (maiden name was always recorded).

No less information can be found in the church books of marriages and deaths.

The fund 1606 "The collection of church and metric books of Transcarpathia", as seen from its name, also includes metric books. They were introduced in our region in October 1895.

Overall, 1788 church books (1712-1952) and 3382 metric books covering the period from 1895 to 1937 are kept in the State Archives of Transcarpathian region, the Novyny Zakarpattya informed.
