On January 27, the world commemorates the Holocaust victims. The anniversary of the liberation of the largest Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau prisoners was also celebrated in Transcarpathia.
In Uzhgorod, regional administration officials, representatives of the Jewish community in the region and ordinary townspeople gathered near the memorial to the victims of the Holocaust.
Addressing the audience, the deputy head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration Oleksandr Petik stressed the importance of preserving the memory of the victims who were brutally killed during the Nazi occupation just because they were Jews.
– Here, on this street, there was a ghetto, where Jews from around the Transcarpathia were herded to and from where more than one hundred thousand people of this nationality were deported to death camps. It happened because of the domination of a brutal ideology when one nation is put above the other. We must remember this. Because the memory of the killed men, women, elderly people and children reminds that all of us are people, regardless of nationality, race and religion, – O. Petik said.
The participants paid tribute to the Holocaust victims with a minute of silence, laid flowers at the memorial sign and lit candles.
