The new year will bring changes not only in the system of relations between society and government. Complex and multi-directional relations of our country with neighbors have also undergone some changes. 

Ukraine will preside in the CIS

On January 1, Ukraine after Belarus began presiding in the Commonwealth of Independent States.

The decision was taken by the Council of CIS Heads of State on October 25, 2013. 

In addition, Ukraine will preside in the Commission for Economic Affairs at the CIS Economic Council.

Belarus and Kazakhstan will be co-presiding in the CIS.

New rules of stay in Russia

On January 1, 2014, new legislation of Russia on the order of entry and exit from the country, and the legal status of foreign citizens in the Russian Federation came into force.

Under the new rules, the period for temporary stay of foreign citizens who arrived in Russia without a visa can not exceed 90 days in total in each period of six months, except as provided by federal law. 

European standards for prisoners

In September 2013, the Parliament of Ukraine adopted a number of laws of Ukraine, which bring national legislation closer to European standards.

One of these laws "On Amendments to the Criminal Executive Code of Ukraine regarding the manner and conditions of serving the sentence" shall enter into force on January 1, 2014.

The law contains a number of new provisions designed to humanize conditions in prison, first of all for such vulnerable categories as mothers with children and convicted juveniles. 

 

Prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment after serving 20 years must be transferred to regular premises, and should not be separated from other prisoners.
