About one hundred residents of the neighborhood on Bohdan Khmelnitsky Square in just a few hours signed the joint statement against the construction of a temple in the green zone.
Recall: recently, bishop Cyril, a priest of the Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate, said that he planned to build a temple there in honor of the memory of the Heaven’s Hundred. The priest arbitrarily installed and consecrated a cross on the square. In response to remarks that he had no permits and approvals from both local authorities and from the community, he says that a church is needed and he will build it anyway. So, residents of the neighbourhood and Uzhgorod in general raised alarm: you can not do such things, especially under the pretext of such important for Ukrainian notions as the Heaven’s Hundred.
Thus, within just three hours, the initiative group collected signatures of nearly one hundred residents of houses, near to Bohdan Khmelnytsky square.
Here is the text of the appeal:
According to the initiator of signatures collection Marianna Sobran, both young and older people, including faithfuls, supported the appeal. They emphasized that they believe in God, go to church, but they do not approve of the construction of a church on the square, and in general consider it something similar to a raider seizure of land and a commercial project. Most residents believe that there should be green area on the square – cozy park for recreation, walking with children, with no facilities.
The appeal signed by residents will be delivered both to Uzhgorod City Council represented by the Acting Mayor, Secretary of the Council Victor Shchadey and the prosecution of Uzhgorod.
Then, active members of the community and residents will be waiting for answers and appropriate response.
