Today, on November 10, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the most famous American soldier of Transcarpathian origin Michael Strenk (Michal Strenk), the commemoration event in his honor took place in Uzhgorod, near the Secondary School No. 4, where his mini-sculpture is located. Michael Strenk was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and one of the soldiers captured on Joe Rosenthal’s most famous photograph of World War II "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima." Michal Strenk was originally from the village of Jarabina, near Stara Lubovna, now these Ukrainian lands are in Slovakia. On November 10, he would turn 100 years old. Yesterday, Transcarpathians: People’s Deputy of Ukraine Robert Horvat and deputy of Uzhgorod City Council Viktor Shchadey paid tribute to the soldier and announced the initiative to install the same mini-sculpture on the territory of Slovakia. The sculpture will be unveiled in Jarabina on February 19, the day when the famous photo was taken 75 years ago. In honor of the 100th anniversary of Michal Strenk, Jarabina village head Liliya Kovalchik and the delegation from Uzhgorod paid tribute to the soldier near the house where Michal Strenk was born and lived for a while.
