Ukraine and Slovakia will jointly clean Transcarpathian water basin

Recently, in Uzhgorod there was a meeting of the Ukrainian-Slovak group on protection and environmental monitoring of transboundary waters of the Tisa river.

During the meeting, experts and environmentalists discussed the implementation of the plan of cooperation and environmental monitoring of the quality of transboundary waters of the Tisa river for 2013 and the environmental "roadmap" of joint environmental measures in the near future.

Experts point out that, in the framework of the bilateral cooperation, the joint testing of water quality is being conducted at five border crossing points. During 2013, ecologists have collected and analyzed 88 water samples. The data of the quality examination showed a significant improvement in water quality, indicating that the biological system of the Tiza has finally recovered after the ecological disaster at the Romanian gold mining mine in 2000.

The Slovak side expressed interest in the Ukrainian government’s Environmental Program for Rehabilitation of the Tisa River Basin in 2013-2021. According to the Slovak environmentalists, the efforts of Ukraine alone can only give local results. Therefore, the parties must agree on the coordination of efforts and the creation of an international plan of specific environmental measures.

Thus, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine together with European colleagues will take part in the construction of water treatment plants, create flood control mechanisms and implement a comprehensive environmental monitoring. In general, the program for rehabilitation of the Tisa includes more than a hundred different projects with a total value, according to preliminary estimates, of more than 4 billion hryvnias.

Environmentalists say that the Tisa river basin is one of the picturesque regions of Europe. Mountain streams, meandering rivers and varied landscape is home to many unique species of plants and animals. The Tisa has a wide variety of species of flora and fauna, many of which are no longer found in other regions of Europe.

The current project of the bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and Slovakia on the Tisa river involves the conservation of biological diversity, improving ecological situation in the region, structural cleaning of the Tisa river basin and the development of ecotourism in the Transcarpathian region.
