Just a few hours ago, during the meeting of the administration of Chop and Mihaylovtsy Customs, Slovak colleagues informed about the today’s incident. The criminal police in Slovakia found an underground tunnel that had been used by smugglers to transfer tobacco products.
The Deputy Head of Chop Customs, the chief of the department combating smuggling and customs offenses Yuri Fedorchuk immediately arrived to the place of discovery. According to him, on the Slovak side, on the territory of a private firm, which is enclosed by a high fence, there was a professionally equipped tunnel (about 600 meters long, stretching across the Ukrainian-Slovak border, 500 meters away from the check point "Uzhgorod") 90 cm in diameter, with rails and trolleys, which have already transferred about 20,000 cartons of cigarettes. In the yard of the Slovak firm there were several trucks, in which under rubble the smugglers hid cigarettes for further transportation to the countries of the European Union.
Chop customs officers immediately reported the Chop border unit management to respond adequately.
Now Chop customs together with border guards and the SSU are looking for the private yard from the Ukrainian side, where there is the second end of the tunnel – the press service of Chop customs informs.
