Transcarpathian Chernobyl accident liquidators are “fighting” with the Treasury

Today Ukraine celebrates the Day of the liquidators of the Chernobyl accident. However Transcarpathian liquidators reminded about themselves already the day before.

Eight Transcarpathians – Chernobyl accidents liquidators and internationalist soldiers – defend their right to benefits. At the building of the Treasury in Uzhgorod they gathered for peaceful campaign to find out the reason of delay in transfers of funds for the purchase of housing.

In Ukraine, there is a state program under which the government must provide housing for priviledged categories of population – Chernobyl accident liquidators and internationalist soldiers. In 2013, they allocated from the budget more than one million hryvnias for the purchase of new flats for privilledged citizens.  The parties entered into contracts and registered payment orders in the Treasury.  However, the financial institution still has not transfered the funds.

"There is a government program, the funds have been allocated from the state budget, but we do not know where they are" – the picketer Mykhailo Nemesh says. The man came from Khust. He needs the new appartment badly, since for years he and his family have been living on thirty square meters. He has already paid taxes and notary services for the purchase of apartment. If the Treasury does not make payment by the end of the year – the money spent on the notary services, will not be refunded.

Arranging the peaceful campaign, the picketers were hoping that by doing they would attract the attention of the government institution. However, none of the officials came to talk to them. Only a few representatives were invited inside to clarify the situation. Finally, they promised that the funds would have been transferred by the end of the next week.
