Thanks to Yaroslav Mudry (The Wise) Rus had particular respect for this holy. In 1030 he built St. George’s Church near Novgorod, and in 1036, in honor of the victory over the Pechenegs, Yaroslav founded a Monastery of St.George in Kiev.
George is believed to be the patron of soldiers. Since the time of the Kulikov Battle St. George is the patron saint of Moscow, and his image as a horseman spearing a dragon became the emblem of the Russian state and capital.
However, not only Russians honour the saint, Georgia has a special attitude to him, the very name of which was taken in his honor, and it is still believed that St George is the patron saint of England.
