Today’s fire in the jail and actions of the firefighters gave the excuse to talk once again about the hydrants, which uzhgorod.in already covered in the article "Our hydrants: monuments to the shortest civilization".

Today, the author of the piece Lina Degtyareva wrote on her page on Facebook that firefighters were extingushing the fire for more than 2.5 hours, and the only reservoir to fill fire trucks was one hydrant on Braschayky street – one of those, which, fortunately, have remained in Uzhgorod.
"The hydrant made in 1930 did the job, but it was revealed that the hydrant was damaged at the joint with the water supply line. Also, there are problems with stormwater drains.
Another hydrant on Krylov street was damaged by utilities so much that it cannot be used for its intended purpose.
The need to restore 1930 ground hydrants in downtown is quite obvious. Therefore, members of the City Council have to allocate funds in 2017 for their full restoration and the overhaul of the water supply nerwork.

The hydrant, which is 86 years old, is saving people and buildings. Hopefully, after another bitter lesson, the decision-makers will finally understand the practical value of these beautiful old city facilities," – Lina Degtyareva says.
