There is no excuse for gross violations of human rights in Ukraine.
This was stated by the U.S. Senator, the Chairman of the United States Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (Helsinki Commission) Ben Cardin, as quoted by the "Radio "Svoboda".
"I am deeply alarmed by yesterday’s decision of the Ukrainian authorities to engage internal troops against peaceful protests in the center of Kyiv again after the brutal crackdown of protesters last week," – he said.
"There is no justification for this actions, which, along with other human rights violations are contrary to the principles of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the relevant commitments and a major stain for Ukraine which holds presidency of the OSCE," – Cardin said in the statement.
The Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission also called on the Ukrainian authorities to take immediate decisive actions to ensure freedom of assembly and to respect the citizens’ right for expression of opinions.
"If the Ukrainian government does not take concrete steps to improve the situation, the international community should seriously consider introducing targeted sanctions against Ukrainian officials responsible for human rights violations, including peaceful protests," – he said.
Earlier, Senator Ben Cardin has already expressed his indignation about the actions of the Ukrainian authorities during a crackdown of Euromaidan and urged diplomats at the meeting of the OSCE, which took place in Kyiv on December 5-6, to pay particular attention to the protection of democratic rights and freedoms in Ukraine.
