The mountains divide – the traditions unite. Unique Hutsul wool blankets were exhibited in Uzhgorod (PHOTOS)

December 29, in the regional museum of folk architecture and life, the final for this year exhibition. "From Fleece to Art" was presented. It is an exhibition of Ivano-Frankivsk region museum, which is a response to a similar visit of Transcarpathian colleagues in summer.

The exhibition was opened by representatives of the National Museum of Folk Art of the Hutsul Land and Pokuttya, Yavoriv Folk Art Center "Hutsul Grazhda" and the Kosiv Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts.

The selection presents the Hutsul traditions in arts and crafts, mainly wool blankets. According to experts, wool blanket making has a long standing tradition in the Carpathian region and for centuries, these products have been warming, decorating homes and accompanying Hutsuls in most crucial moments in life. Blankets of wool have broad economic application, decorative value, and also are shrouded by many legends, often used as amulets.

The exhibition will interesting for a wide range of people, but most of all it must be seen by local craftsmen in order to adopt this positive experience in the conservation and enhancement of wool blanket making traditions, – the Head of the Culture Department of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration Yuriy Hleba said. Meanwhile, according to the director of Yavoriv Folk Art Center "Hutsul Grazhda" Vasyl Losyuk, in Ivano-Frankivsk region, this craft is now having a real renaissance.

The exhibition also features other textile products based on Hutsul ornamentation, including original modern clothes made by students of Kosiv Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts.

The exhibition will run throughout January.
