The most expensive bread in Ukraine is in Transcarpathia

16 UAH per loaf is a speculation by local bakers

Along with prices of most food products in stores, the price of bread has also risen. Today, the price of a loaf of ordinary white bread in Uzhgorod sometimes reaches 16 UAH, and in Mukachevo and Beregovo – 13.  

The Department of Economic Development and Trade of the RSA say that the price of bread in the region is clearly overstated and unfounded.

"The cost of 1 kg of flour is approximately equal to the cost of a 650-gram loaf of bread – it is a universal rule for calculating an adequate price. However, while a kilo of flour for bakers costs 9 UAH, the finished product for some reason is sold at 13, 15 and even 16 UAH. It would be logically to assume that it is the result of speculation by bread makers in the region", – the director of the department Mykhailo Kivkovych said.

It is unlikely that supermarkets and shops are involved in overpricing, because bread is too small share of their earnings, he says. By the order of the head of the Regional State Administration, it was approved that supermarkets have no right to put a margin for bread in excess of 10% and they, apparently, observe these limits.

The same order established the profit margin for producers – no more than 5%. But, given the prices on the shelves, they know no limits.

"All manufacturers and flour enterprises, that have unreasonably overstated prices in the wake of the general rise in prices, will soon be brought to responsibility. The head of the Regional State Administration instructed the regional Antimonopoly Committee to check them. By the next week, we will have a complete picture – which entrepreneurs behaved in the present situation sensibly, and which ones decided to cash in – Yuriy Lesyo, the Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Development of the RSA said. – We have wheat and sugar in abundance, so the jump in prices can not be the result of the deficit."
