The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary: the statement of the Prime Minister Orban on autonomy of Transcarpathia contains nothing new

The statement by the Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban does not contain any new elements in international diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Hungary for the past 25 years. This policy has been supported by all governments of Hungary in the last decade.

This was said by Janos Martonyi, Hungarian Foreign Minister in Brussels on May 12, at the request of journalists to comment on the statement by Viktor Orban on the support of the autonomy of Hungarians in neighboring countries.

"We strongly reject any incorrect interpretation of those words, good or bad," – János Martonyi said, whose quote is posted on the official website of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary.

Recall that the Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Saturday, May 10, 2014 during a speech in the parliament of Hungary said that Hungarians living in the Carpathian Basin are eligible for dual citizenship, the rights of communities and autonomy.

Also the Hungarian Foreign Minister reminded that recently one of the candidates for the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and one of the Transcarpathian Hungarian organizations had signed a cooperation agreement. It referred to the continued support and empowerment of self-government for Hungarians living in Transcarpathian region in order to "improve their situation."

In turn, the Hungarians of Transcarpathia did not demand any autonomy in the signed agreement.
