The second decade of July, in Transcarpathian region was marked by the extraordinary personality, writer, chronicler of Transcarpathian mentality Mykhailo Tomchaniy. A number of events – conferences, roundtables, tours, debates – celebrated the 100th anniversary of the author, who, according to the head of the territorial organization of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine Vasyl Husti, created a novel that has become a real hallmark of the region.
"The Valley of Daffodils, the Synevyr Lake, the Nevytsky castle… I think the novel "The Zhmenyaks" by Mykhailo Ivanovich has a prominent place in this list of symbols of Transcarpathia. Therefore, this anniversary is celebrated not only by his colleagues, students and friends, not only by Transcarpathian region, but by all reading Ukrainians", – Vasyl Petrovich said.
Special events in honor of the writer, naturally, took place in libraries. The first one was Mukachevo city library. Here, the poet Nadiya Panchuk says, they created a special atmosphere, which was felt by all participants. The Regional Scientific Library was the next. The round table brought together those who knew Mykhailo Tomchaniya personally, those who consider themselves his disciples, those who admire his work, and of course his descendants.
For the son and daughter of Mykhailo Ivanovich, these days are moving, joyful and bewildering at the same time.
"Knight of Honor and Love" – this how the script writer, journalist Iryna Harmasiy named the movie about the author. She says that a major discovery for her, while working on the film, was extremely talented combination of a writer and a father in one man. His wife was a Hungarian who moved with Mykhailo Ivanovich to his homeland, was by his side through the life.
Translations into and from Ukrainian, novels, short stories – Mykhailo Tomchaniy’s literary legacy lives not only on the pages of new publications, but also on the stage and screen. It belongs to the category of writers who despite socialist-realist emasculation managed to convey to the reader a true and honest voice of the author. Perhaps, it is because of this that the legacy of Tomchaniy is still relevant and the figure of the "Knight of Honor and Love" remains among his descendants.
