The flood in Transcarpathian region is waning, the water in the rivers has dropped by 0.7 to 2 meters

The autumn flood that began on Saturday in the highlands of Transcarpathia is waning. As of Monday morning, water levels in major rivers of the region have dropped by 0.7 to 2 meters.

Now the flood wave is near the village of Badalovo in Beregovo district on the border with Hungary. In some places the water reached the floodplain, but facilities are not flooded. In Chop (Transcarpathian extreme point on the border of Hungary), the water level in the Tisa is expected to rise up to 8 meters, which does not pose a threat of flooding. The big water will completely leave Transcarpathia in three days.

– Three districts of the region – Rakhiv, Tyachiv and Mizhhirya – were affected by the flood the most, – the head of the Regional State Administration Hennadiy Moskal said. – As of Monday morning, ten private homes in Mizhhirya district and about thirty – in Tyachiv district still remain flooded. The water is mainly in basements, not in living rooms. Most floods are the result of groundwater rising and overflow of mountain streams, not because of the major rivers overflowing their banks.

Thanks to the coordinated work of rescue workers, local authorities and population, there were no victims or destructions in the private sector. There was no need for evacuation (with the exception of a few dozen people who were evacuated to neighbors and relatives). Vehicular traffic has resumed on all tracks, there are no more electricity blackouts. According to preliminary data, no damaged pavement on the roads of national importance due to flood has been recorded. However, in some mountain settlements, bridges for cars and animal-drawn transport were destroyed (especially in Tyachiv district near Ust-Chorna), dirt roads were washed out.

Now, special commissions are establishing the damages caused by the flood, we will appeal to the Cabinet to allocate funds from the reserve fund to eliminate the consequences of the disaster. And also to resume the financing for the flood program "Tisa". It is already clear that the greatest losses are from the destroyed dams.

Now rescue services continue to pump water out of the flooded homes in the mountain villages. By the end of the day, the work will have been completed.
