Young children immediately surrounded the container, started to climb on it and jump inside. Adults were whispering to each other and asking: "Have they really begun to treat Roma as humans?" Perhaps for urban residents, this event would not seem a unique news, but for Roma it is an event of the century.
Previously, for several years Mukachevo city officials have tried to install trash bins in the camp, but people perceived it as an invasion of personal territory and did not give consent for the installation. Misunderstanding and inability to establish contact between local authorities and Roma has remained for a long time. Now, thanks to the Charitable Fund "Development" and the new head of Roma settlement Oleksandr Baloh, the situation has completely changed.
At first, there were several conflicts about the locations of containers, residents of nearby houses did not want to have a huge dumpster near them, but after conversations and explanations of the importantance of central collection and removal of wastes, people have agreed to installation of the container.
On Thursday, the first container was set, two more will be installed next week. In the future, there will be a container on every street of the camp.
