After the barbaric destruction of the Fundanych house, Uzhgorod community has been quite active and is trying to find ways to legally prevent similar incidents in the future. And it’s really great.
Therefore, within the initiative #saveuzhgorod, I would like to remind about some other architectural monuments of the city that are still there, but already on the verge of destruction. Unfortunately, the Fundanych store is gone for good, but let’s try to preserve what is left.
One of such places is the house at Drugety st., 65.
In my opinion, this once even somewhat pretentious building is one of the highlights that should adorn Uzhgorod and characterize a certain period of its history, development. This is a fairly typical type of residential development during the Austro-Hungarian period – long facade along the street on the first line, with a large gate that leads into a spacious yard.
I am not a specialist in architectural genres, so I do not know what style it is – Baroque, Classicism or something else. But I am sure of one thing: this house is very beautiful.
But at the moment, the house is in poor condition and it seems that the current owners are preparing for its demolition. The yard is overgrown with weeds. The front windows are boarded. Glass is broken. The roof is partially destroyed. Part of the stucco fell off, although it is quite possible to restore it with what is left.
Look at the photos.
There are many NGOs, active citizens in Uzhgorod. So, this article is a call ro them: let’s try to save what still can be saved. It would be a shame, if another multi-storey glass and concrete monster appears at this spot.
