Ten iron facts about the heroism and courage of the 128th Brigade

Today, the 128th Mountain Infantry Brigade is celebrating its 95th anniversary. And we want to tell interesting facts from the history of this brave team.

So, let’s begin:

1) The history of the 128th Separate Guards Mechanized Turkestan-Transcarpathian Brigade began in 1922 in Poltoratsk (now Ashkhabad) as the 1st Turkestan Infantry Division, the division commander was Sergey Prokopovich TIMOSHKOV.

2) From 1922 to 1931, the division was fighting against Bassmachis in Turkestan.  With the start of World War II, the division entered Iranian territory to eliminate the threat of German invasion to the Soviet Union from the Asian South. On November 6, 1942, the division began fighting the enemy in battles for the Great Caucasus Mountains on the outskirts of Tuapse. After Tuapse, there were battles near Krasnodar, liberation of Kuban, Taman Peninsula. For the liberation of the Kuban and the Taman, the Division was awarded the honorary title of "Guards" and the 83rd Mountain Infantry Division was renamed to the 128th Guards Mountain Infantry Division.

3) After the war, on July 25, 1945, the Division units arrived at the home stations – in Transcarpathia. In the postwar period, the soldiers took part in the Hungarian and Czechoslovak events. Two soldiers of the Division were awarded the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union.

4) On May 9, 1985, for the achievements in combat and political training and in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Victory, the Division was awarded the second Order of the Red Banner.

5) On January 19, 1992, the personnel of the Division – one of the first in Ukraine! – swore the military oath of allegiance to the Ukrainian people.

6) In May 1994, a peacekeeping contingent for resolving the ethnic conflict in the former Yugoslavia was formed at the military units.

7) Fearlessly eliminating the consequences of the terrible floods in Transcarpathian region in 1998 and 2001, the soldiers of the divisions became true heroes in the hearts of Transcarpathians.

8) On January 10, 2000, by the Decree of the President of Ukraine, the Division was awarded the title of "Transcarpathian".

9) On December 1, 2004, the 128th Mechanized Division was reformed into the 128th Separate Mechanized Brigade, which became the successor of all its awards and honorary titles. Today the proud name of the brigade is 128th Separate Guards Mountain Infantry Transcarpathian Brigade.

10) Since the beginning of the ATO, our heroes have been courageously defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine in the East.
