Rare mushrooms resembling sea creatures are found in Transcarpathian forests (PHOTOS)

Photos of the unusual find were posted on the social network Facebook by Oleg Grigoriev.

Oleg Grigoriev found mushrooms resembling starfish in a forest near the village of Verkhnya Vyznytsia in Mukachevo district.

As it turned out, these are the fungi of the species Clathrus archeri (Berk.) Dring – Archer’s clathrus. Such fungi are considered rare in Ukraine and are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine (3rd edition, 2009) as an endangered species. However, these fungi are widespread in four regions of Ukraine – Transcarpathian, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv and Chernivtsi.

Archer’s clathrus grows on acidic soils in deciduous and mixed forests. Occasionally occurs in meadows and parks. Fruit bodies are formed from July to September.
