Poltava region workers come to cut off water supply in Uzhgorod

The decision ‘On the termination of service water supply and/or drainage for consumer debtors in Uzhgorod’ was approved during the meeting of the Executive Committee of Uzhgorod City Council today, April 18.

According to this decision, executive committee members allowed CP ‘Uzhgorod Vodokanal’ sign a contract with the public utility enterprise of the Poltava Regional Council ‘Poltavavodokanal’ in order to cut off debtors from the public utilities water networks and sewage systems within 5 working days.

Before approving the decision the Mayor of Uzhgorod Viktor Pogorelov said that ‘Zakarpattiaoblenerho’ put a very strict requirement for ‘Vodokanal’ (water utility) to pay off the debt for electricity, so to disconnect the debtors is so far the only effective method that will make people pay. Currently the water utility debt is nearly 20 million hryvnia.

But the members of the executive committee wanted to make sure that disconnection will be held in a fair way. In particular, the first deputy mayor, member of the Regional Council Viktor Trykur remarked that such punitive actions must not start from the poor citizens of Uzhgorod but from those who have high incomes and dare not to pay the public utility bills for years. He also supported the words of his colleagues that it is necessary to stop the unfair practice of disconnection the whole building from the water supply and drainage rather than cutting off a concrete apartment and a concrete debtor.
