Rare birds – rock buntings (Emberiza cia L.) – have settled in Uzhgorod. They were captured by Oksana Vashchuk.
The very presence of this species in our land is unusual: "The rock buntings were first spotted in Uzhgorod by a known Transcarpathian birder Yevhen Man. According to him, a flock of 6 birds settled on the Radvanka quarry about a month ago. This mountain bird is a very rare species for mainland Ukraine. They nest in the mountains of the Crimea. The habitat of the species covers Eurasia and North Africa. In Europe – in the west, mountain regions of France, Italy, West Germany; on the Balkan Peninsula. The appearance of the rock buntings in Uzhgorod became a real sensation among ornithologists and birds enthusiasts. Birders from as far away as Dnipro and Cherkasy came to see the birds!
The main question today is whether the buntings will choose the Radvanka quarry for nesting. It is known that when choosing a nest site, buntings look for a stream, or a mountain river, as well as large stones and rocks, so the chances are good ;)" – Ms. Oksana wrote.
