Open tour was held at the Uzhgorod Roman Catholic Cathedral (PHOTOS)

Last Sunday, in Uzhgorod, an open tour took place in the church of St. George at the beginning of Voloshin Street. The temple’s priest Fr. Serhiy told about the history and the current state of the temple.

The construction of this temple is associated with the name of Yuriy Druget, who in 1610 returned from the Reformed faith to Catholicism. He then demolished the Lutheran church near the castle, and allocated a plot for the construction of a new Catholic church. The temple acquired its current late-baroque look in 1766.  In 1820, the city clock was installed on the church. Later, the clock burned down during the fire.
In 1857, the then Roman Catholic pleban István Varga used the funds of the faithfuls to install a new clock on the church tower. It had to be wound up once a day. In the summer of 1904, the clock stopped. Then, the city council used their own funds to order a new clock at the Jozef and David Frieds company, which was installed the same year and is still working.

The temple has old but well-preserved paintings on the walls, magnificent stained-glass windows and an ancient iconostasis. During the last reconstruction, the sculpture of the Virgin Mary, which has been standing in the courtyard since before the Second World War, was restored.
