Uzhgorod’s face has been changing rather dramatically. And it is transforming from a once cozy European town into a modern urban monster.
In the past three years alone, such historic buildings as the Korona Hotel, the Chervena Ruzha Restaurant, the Uzhgorod Cinema and the Cyril Fundanich House have been damaged or completely destroyed.
As an example of what the city center may look like in the near future, here is the design of a house on Bercheni Street, near Koryatovych Square. According to the realtor, it is sold for 55 thousand dollars. The project is ready for reconstruction and is offered for commercial activity.
This glass and concrete project is not the worst option. And it could quite organically fit into a neighbourhood of new buildings, but not in the historical center, where there should be a completely different aura.
In Uzhgorod, there are several public organizations, whose activists are engaged in the preservation of the historical heritage of the city and the region – including not only research, but also protests against the destruction of monuments. However, this "Salvation Army" is not too numerous yet. Community support as well as effective legislation that would make it impossible to destroy our past are badly needed.
