The first equestrian statue was unveiled in Transcarpathia. The monument, erected in the center of Mukachevo, is dedicated to the patron saint of the city – St. Martin, depicted on the coat of arms of the city.
The sculptural composition depicts Martin himself, riding a horse, and a beggar, to whom he gives a piece of his cloak to warm him up. This is the plot of the legend of St. Martin, who was a skillful warrior, but later people asked him to become a bishop.
The monument was made by sculptors Stepan Fedorin and Mykola Hurmak, the idea was suggested by Mykhailo Kish. The bronze monument stands on a travertine pedestal, it is 5 meters and 50 centimeters tall and weighs 33 tons. The monument was made in Mukachevo. The decision to erect a sculpture of the patron saint of the city was adopted in 2012, and the cornerstone was laid and consecrated in 2017 – on the birthday of St. Martin, it is believed that he was born 1700 years ago.
According to the host of the opening ceremony, professor of UzhNU, the chairman of the Regional Tourist Association Fedir Shandor, the event is important for the whole region. This is the first equestrian sculpture in the region, and it is a step away from provincialism, – the ethnographer says. Secondly, St. Martin is recognized by various Christian denominations, and this figure is not controversial.
Fedir Shandor also mentioned an exclusive detail, even a riddle: "There is something inside the monument that will be triggered on November 11, when the day of St. Martin is celebrated in Mukachevo." It is interesting to see what happens…
