The State Emergencies Service of Ukraine in Transcarpathian region reported that the rain that fell at night on May 29 to 30 was likely caused by sand storm. The cyclone, which brought such unusual colored rain to Transcarpathia, came to us from North Africa. Also we inform concerned residents of the region that no industrial disasters in Slovakia and Hungary have been recorded, so there is no reason for concern.
According to the Transcarpathian Centre for Hydrometeorology, they measured the background radiation and examined the state of air pollution. The results are within normal limits.
According to Joseph Chaplara, meteorologist of the Slovak Meteorological Institute (newspaper Dnes.sk), a strong wind in Libya and Western Egypt on May 28 brought a lot of dust and sand into the air. Due to intense airflow, that dust and sand got across the Mediterranean to Europe and the Balkans, including Hungary and Slovakia. Hence the origin of dust is the Sahara Desert. Such carrying over is rare, but it happens. This was reported in the State Department of Environmental Protection in Transcarpathian region.
Given the above, health officers advise to thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables before eating and boil water before using it for drinking purposes.
