Messages from the past were restored in UzhNU

As you know, last summer, ancient Hebrew inscriptions were discovered in the building of the Biology Faculty pf UzhNU.

Now they have been restored and beautifully arranged. The Dean of the Faculty Yaroslava Hasynets told the Uzhhorod.net how they were found, where they come from and what they actually read.

"The front building was built in the 17th century (the back one was constructed later). On the first floor, there was a bakery – there, they made bread for Jews all over the region – and the rest of the building was occupied with classrooms, because, as you know, there was a Jewish school for boys here – the Dean of the Biology Faculty Yaroslava Hasynets says. – And this year, while repairing room on the third floor of the building, we found two inscriptions, in Hungarian and Hebrew: above the first entrance – "High School", and above the other one – "The Jewish People’s School".

Having found the inscriptions, we turned to various experts; the interim Vice-rector on scientific and pedagogical and educational work Fedir Shandor assisted in this. Uzhgorod sculptor Mykhailo Kolodko responded to our request and in early September began the restoration: he retouched some letters and framed the inscription. During these works, Mr. Myhailo found over the words "The Jewish People’s School" a Star of David (we had not noticed it during the repair), so we framed it too."

Also, the Dean of the Faculty noted that these inscriptions are of interest for tourists – especially those of the Jewish nationality. The access to the inscriptions is not restricted, so anyone can come and see them.
