The use of Hungarian language which is spoken by the inhabitants of Transcarpathia is now regulated by the new law. Ethnic Hungarians constitute 12% of the regional population. However, there is no reason yet to talk about recognition of Hungarian as a regional language. Massive receipt of Hungarian passports by the residents of the region is currently more critical issue for the Transcarpathia. To become a citizen of a neighboring state, one needs to meet just few requirements – to master Hungarian, to have at least distant Hungarian relatives and have no previous convictions. There is no official statistical records on the number of Ukrainians who obtained this passport. In Ukraine, dual citizenship is prohibited. Unofficial data indicates of tens of thousands cases.
