According to the press service of the regional council, the chairman of the Transcarpathian Regional Council Ivan Baloha said that the refusal of the country leaders from European integration vector of the state creates tension in the community and is a betrayal of the interests of millions of Ukrainian citizens who want to see Ukraine in the European family.
"Today, we are witnessing the surrender of Ukraine’s foreign policy, starting with infamous Kharkiv agreements and ending with the government’s decision to abandon the European integration course. For Transcarpathian community, any way of the state’s development, other than the values of democracy and integration into the European community, is unacceptable.
There are clear and understandable for us, Transcarpathians, things. The EU citizens live better than we do. They have better roads, quality healthcare, decent wages and pensions, governments controlled by people. For me, as the head of the regional council, there is only one political position – the European future of Ukraine. And the entire Transcarpathian community support this. During the year, a lot of work has been done in the region to ensure the country’s integration with the European family.
Back in February this year, during the session of the regional council, elected representatives adopted the European integration appeal. Deputies of our region asked the country’s leaders to ensure implementation of planned activities on further full-scale European integration of Ukraine and signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union in November this year.
Today, 348 local councils in Transcarpathian region of 351 – village, town, city, district and the regional one – have appealed to the country’s leaders about the need for the European integration of the country. And this position is supported not only in Transcarpathian region, but also in other regions of the country.
If the government ignores the opinion of its citizens, the people will adequately respond to the betrayal of the state interests. The future of the country must be decided not by a handful of politicians in Kyiv, but by millions of Ukrainians who are eager to see the country in Europe. I urge the Transcarpathian community to defend European integration", – Ivan Baloha said.
