Transcarpathia is preparing to launch an intercity-plus "Kyiv-Mukachevo", the train will make a trip between the capital and the Transcarpathian city in 9 hours.
Two EKR-01 trains will be specially produced for this route at the Kryukiv plant.
This was announced by the Deputy Head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration Vitaliy Tsvihun at the Re:Open Zakarpattia forum, a correspondent of the Ukrinform reports.
"In Transcarpathia, we are preparing to launch an intercity-plus "Kyiv-Mukachevo", the train will make a trip between the capital and the Transcarpathian city in 9 hours," – Tsvihun said.
According to him, there have been initiatives to launch an intercity in Transcarpathia.
“At that time, Ukrzaliznytsia tested two trains for such routes in Transcarpathia – a Hyundai and an EKR-01 train of the Kryukiv plant. Unfortunately, Hyundai could not made the trip and failed in the mountains. But the Kryukiv train succeeded. We asked the Kryukiv plant if they would be able to build two such trains for Transcarpathia, subject to state funding. They said yes. The region appealed to the Cabinet of Ministers to provide funding for these two trains in the budget,” – Tsvihun said.
According to him, there are no funds for those two trains yet. "This is not a cheap purchase, but it will pay off – the demand for such a train is very high," – the official added.
Currently, Transcarpathia does not have a high-speed connection with Kyiv. Train rides from Uzhgorod to Kyiv take more than 12 hours.
