After the report about the death of the animals, experts arrived at the scene and conducted an autopsy, took samples and sent them for examination to Lviv Regional State Laboratory of Veterinary Medicine. The examination revealed in all dead pig the DNA of the African fever virus. The same samples were sent to the State Research Institute of Laboratory Diagnostics and Veterinary Expertise in the city of Kyiv, where the diagnosis was confirmed.

Currently, the threat of infection has been eliminated, the acting chief of the Main Office of the State Food Safety Service in Transcarpathian region Z. Romanovych said. All the pigs in the complex and the wooden cages, in which they were kept, were burned, the remains were treated with chlorine, disinfection was carried out. For the next 40 days, vets will be checking pigs at the farms located within 20 km from site.

The exact cause of the infection is unknown. Perhaps, African swine could have gotten into the animals’ food from infected meat products.

Experts emphasize that the virus is dangerous only for pigs, because it leads to their death. African swine fever is not dangerous for other domestic animals and humans.
