The international conference, which takes place now in Uzhgorod, is dedicated to the most common severe genetic disease – cystic fibrosis.
Project "Implementation of advanced features to ensure the best care for patients with cystic fibrosis in the Transcarpathian region" is realized in the framework of cross-border cooperation Hungary – Slovakia – Romania – Ukraine 2007-2013.
Experts from Slovakia, Sweden, France and Ukraine teach Transcarpathian doctors and parents of children with this difficult disease diagnostics and European canons of supportive physiotherapy treatment of this disease.
The disease manifests itself in lesions of the endocrine glands, which secrete a secret and impede the natural mucus secretion. As a result, bodies cease to function normally and simply wear out. Cystic fibrosis affects the bronchial system, pancreas, liver, intestinal glands, sweat glands and saliva.
Symptoms of cystic fibrosis are frequent bronchitis, problems with the digestive system.
Earlier cystic fibrosis was attributed to fatal diseases because life expectancy of toddler patients did not exceed 3-5 years. Although the terrible illness remains incurable, medical support can significantly change the situation. With timely diagnostics and correct treatment strategy a patient can fully live to old age.
The total number of people with cystic fibrosis in the Transcarpathian region is 31, 15 of them are children. Although, according to the chief child immunologist Oksana Stynych, the real figure is several times larger and by the estimates of European experts it must be about 120 people.
