Each Hungarian uses an average of over 80 plastic bags a year, most of which becomes household waste immediately after use, the MyHungary.Net informs.
A bulk of the plastic waste is taken to landfills, which is even worse as it pollutes the environment due a prolonged decomposition period. Plastic decomposing under natural conditions splits into small particles that do not decompose completely. These particles are not only the cause of death of animals, products of plastic decomposition contaminate soil and groundwater.
In 2019, the Ministry of Innovations and Technologies (Innovaciones and Technológiai Minisztérium) plans to develop and introduce a series of rigorous measures to get rid of disposable plastic bags and plastic cutlery. At the same time, the Ministry of Innovations and Technologies has developed proposals to restrict the use of plastic bags in the framework of regulating fees for the introduction of eco-friendly bags instead of plastic ones. It is expected that changes to the Law on product tariffs will increase the price of plastic bags, which will be subject to additional fees.
As of January 1, 2021, the Ministry of Innovations and Technologies of Hungary plans to ban all plastic bags.
