On August 18, at night, a group of intruders vandalized the Hungarian cemetery, located on Castle Hill in Hust. Unidentified men destroyed monuments, crosses, fences by the graves, smashed to pieces figure of Our Lady, which stood in the courtyard in front of the chapel.
Unfortunately, this is not the first case of vandalism at the cemetery in the town on Tysa.
It should be noted that if Khust police finds persons guilty of committing the act of vandalism, those persons will be prosecuted under Article 297 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (the desecration of grave, burial place, corpse or funerary urn, and theft of items from a burial place or the body), which is punishable with "a fine up to one hundred untaxed minimum incomes, or arrest for a term up to six months, or custodial restraint for a term up to three years, or imprisonment for the same term."
According to Michailo Prystai, some of the town citizens do not consider cemetery some special place, because right in front of the entrance gate to the Hungarian cemetery (also popularly called "old cemetery"), where, by the way, well-known local cultural educational activist Mykola Arkas is buried, someone made a real landfill.
