Hungarians have counted how much of our fuel didn’t shatter their economy

If during 2011 Hungarian Customs and Finance Service seized 572,490 liters of fuel at all borders, just in 2 months of this year the number has been more than 60,000 liters only in the north-Alfyold region, a neighbor of Transcarpathia. This was announced today, May 16, to Ukrainian journalists by the financial inspector of the National Customs and Tax Administration of Hungary Karol Sabo and the head north-Alfyold customs and financial management of the national tax and customs inspections of Hungary Mezo Gabor.
From March 1 this year, Hungary has introduced a more stringent testing system of vehicles entering and leaving the country, in particular, how much fuel they import, what mileage they do, if they are equipped with the factory or home-made tanks etc. Entry with a full tank is allowed only to those who need it for some special reason and only once a week. Otherwise, the fuel is confiscated and even fines are imposed.
Thus, Hungary is again protecting itself from the importation of cheap fuel, which has been one of the sources of income for many Transcarpathians for many years. However, recently, due to the growth of prices for Ukrainian fuel, it has stopped being so profitable.
Hungary has been making such attempts since 2005. Prior to the introduction of a strict control, they say, about 7000 cars used to cross the Ukrainian-Hungarian border per day, and now it is about two thousand. So in 2006 the law on excise duties started being applied, subsequently they controlled the "green border" and in 2010 the statistical system of border crossing records was introduced, according to which the amount of fuel should be declared when entering and leaving the country, indicating kilometres traveled in Hungary. They say that every time after such measures fuel smuggling was decreasing and now a black market has actually disappeared.
Now the Hungarian customs officials emphasize that one may go to Hungary more than once a week under the condition but the necessity of a visit must be clearly explained and confirmed with the documents. It will be additionally checked and recorded in the database of Customs and Finance Service. For example, Hungarian customs officers already have samples of the travel documents of officials. In addition, you cannot go by a car with a redesigned fuel tank.

By the way, Karol Sabo said that the seized fuel is processed and later sold for a nominal price, for example, 10 forints, to some departments. It is also used for official purposes of the Ministry of Emergencies. But customs officials have no right to take it, just as other things seized at the border, for their service.
