Uzhgorod.in continues covering the topic of the state of cemeteries in our city – and not only as burial places, but also as evidence of our respect for the memory and history of Uzhgorod.
On his Facebook page, Pavlo Chuchka tells about people who really care about the memorable places and invites the patriots of our city to make thier contribution.
– The end of the First World War (the Great War) for Uzhgorod meant an end of hard trials. During the war, about 10.5 thousand soldiers from 19 countries were buried in our city. Most of the soldiers are unknown. The documents from the State Archives in the Czech Republic point to the cemetery of the reserve military hospital located on the other side of the railway track opposite the station.
In the early 60’s, the existing cemetery was destroyed. The stone white cross was thrown down and buried.
It would seem that it has been forgotten.
But no!
The public organization "Panonia" (Fedir Shandor) has rebuilt the memorable place, and the "Genius" Charity Foundation has restored the aesthetic look and information part of the monument on Egan Square. I praise them for it.
Several years ago, other public organizations "Obec legionářská v Užhorodě" (Bohdan Pylypiv) and "Carpathian Sich" (Mykhailo Balla) cleared the pre-war military cemetery in the Shakhta neighbourhood. There are other places in Uzhgorod that remind of the time when tens of thousands of disabled boys and sick Slovenians, Italians, Turks, Czechs, Croats, Hungarians, Austrians, Germans passed through our city on the way from the eastern front in the Carpathians.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the conclusion of the First World Peace. It’s time to coordinate our public activities and financial resources in this area.
See you at historical places, dear patriots, friends, ethnographers!
The exact time and place will be announced in the near future.
