Garlic as a local brand: farmers of a Transcarpathian mountain village pride themselves on their baked vegetables

Entrepreneur Vladislav Symochko grows garlic on an area of 3 hectares in the Transcarpathian village of Turyi Remety. In several years, the plants have adapted to the extreme mountain climate, and the entrepreneur has organized the distribution of garlic to local restaurants and the processing of garlic products, the agrarii-razom writes.

"In the autumn of 2015, we sowed 2 hectares of garlic, after the first season we analyzed the mistakes, and in the same autumn sowed on the area three times larger – 6 hectares. However, now we have reduced the garlic area to 3 hectares, since the price of garlic has decreased significantly in the last few years. When we started, a kilo of garlic in wholesale cost UAH 75, ie $ 3, and now it is $ 1.6-1.7. Large volumes are more difficult to sell, so we decided to grow as much as we can sell through local shops and fairs,” – farmer Vladyslav Symochko said.

In a short period of time, Turyi garlic has become a recognizable local brand. The farm sells it to local Transcarpathian restaurants and shops. Now, even Transcarpathian craft cheese in the famous "Perechyn manufactory" is produced with the addition of this spicy vegetable grown by Vladislav Symochko.
