Hungary’s National Food Network Authority has informed that laboratory examinations of dead boars found in the Budakeszi district (Pest region) revealed a dangerous swine fever.
Veterinary experts immediately began the necessary procedure to stop the spread of African fever. The investigation into how animals could have become infected is still ongoing.
It is noted that over the last few months, there have been numerous reports of dead boars found near Budapest. In five boars, the ASP virus was found during laboratory testing.
The African fever virus is thought to have been brought to the outskirts of Budapest by people from the countries where the disease is raging. Although African swine fever is harmless to humans, it causes serious damage to the economy as infected animals must be killed and burned immediately.
The Hungarian Veterinary Service states that all who have sick pigs must notify the service immediately. They also warn everyone not to throw away trash in the wild and clean their shoes and clothes carefully after hiking in the woods.
It is possible that control at the borders of Hungary, in particular with Ukraine, will be toughened.
