As we reported, today, at the plenary session of Uzhgorod city council there was a conflict involving representatives of religious denominations.
Uzhgorod Mayor Bohdan Andriyiv commented on the situation that arose during the meeting.
"I believe that representatives of both denominations – the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate – should negotiate in order to amicably resolve the conflict that has been going on since 2002.
I am for peaceful resolution of conflicts. I have repeatedly cited examples: in the center of Uzhgorod, on Tseholnyanska street, two churches – Greek Catholic and Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate – stand next to each other, I have never seen any problems there. In some settlements, priests of different denominations alternately hold services in the same church.
So I want to stress once again: I believe that the clergy, parishioners should find consensus instead of resolving conflicts with shouts and mutual insults."
