The European Union member countries and the Schengen zone participants without border control on the internal borders have agreed that they may renew such a control with much less complex terms than before.
Such a step was unanimously agreed by the meeting participants and the Ministers of Internal Affairs of these countries, according to the Denmark representatives, which currently holds the EU presidency.
This decision will allow 26 Schengen zone participating countries to restore the border control in the internal borders within this zone for one year term, citing to the ‘exceptional circumstances’. Issues related to the illegal immigration were also included under these circumstances at the request of France and Germany.
European Commissioner of the Internal Affairs Sesilia Malmstrem, who opposed the changes, said that she ‘disappointed’ in the current solution.
And the President of the European Parliament Martin Shults called the ministers’ decision ‘counterproductive’ and promised to fight with it.
The ‘Schengen zone’ participating countries had significantly narrower opportunities for the internal border control temporary restoration so far. In particular, some countries restored to it at the time of large sports championships in order to stop at the border well known fans-hooligans.
