Bicycle infrastructure will be developed in Uzhgorod (PHOTOS)

Key tasks for ensuring appropriate conditions for bicycle users and micromobile groups have been identified in Uzhgorod. A transport concept for the city’s development is to be formulated, including the introduction of a modern public bicycle rental system.

The development of cycling infrastructure is quite relevant at this time, not only as a tourist attraction, but also as a convenient alternative to public transport. Uzhgorod development strategy until 2030 provides for popularization of bicycle traffic and expansion of bicycle infrastructure, the city economic development department informs.

Last year, the department announced the search for an investor for public bicycle rental. After studying many legal aspects and receiving the support from the deputies, the Uzhgorod Municipal Transport utility company began working on the implementation of the planned measures in order to develop the city’s transport infrastructure.

Last week, a meeting of the working group on the development of the city’s cycling infrastructure took place. This group, in addition to the heads of the relevant departments of the city council, includes members of the public, including the head of the NGO "FORZA" Lesya Loiko and the head of the Uzhgorod Municipal Transport Vitaliy Hotra.

To determine the stages of the cycling infrastructure development, already existing projects of bicycle lanes on the streets and locations of future public bicycle rental stations were presented. They also solved some problematic issues that arose during the planning and development of measures for further arrangement of bicycle paths with their integration into the transport system of the city.

The work of the group also involves identifying priority areas for bicycle infrastructure funding, for example, experts are considering the possibility of making a "recreational ring" along the embankments of the Uzh river and connnecting densely populated areas with the central part of the city. The most important thing in the arrangement of bicycle paths and lanes is the safety and comfort of road users, it will contribute to the development of cycling culture in Uzhgorod, the Uzhgorod City Council informs.
